I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi. I was the fourth of five children. As a child I loved to read. I seldom left home without a book in my hand. I was a Girl Scout and camping was my favorite part of scouting. When I was a teenager, our troop worked with children who had Cerebral Palsy and I later worked as a counselor for Handicapped children. The seed was planted for my career as a teacher for Special Needs children. I got my Education Specialist degree in education and
I taught for forty years in Georgia.
Our children and grandchildren ended up in North Carolina so my husband and I moved to Asheville, North Carolina in 2012. We enjoy living near our three children and our four grandsons. We have two dogs and three turtles. I love living in the mountains. As a young child, I spent part of my summers in the Pennsylvania mountains at my granddaddy's house. I told my mom that someday I wanted to live in the mountains, but after settling in Georgia, I never thought it would happen. When my children ended up in North Carolina, we decided to move closer so my dream came true.
Writing has always been part of my life. In high school I had an essay and a poem published in our literary magazine. In college I was editor of the yearbook my senior year. When I first started teaching, I co-authored a handbook for parents of special needs children and helped write the curriculum guide for DeKalb County in Georgia.
In 1996 I took part in the Coastal Georgia writing project, which was a national program of teachers teaching teachers to use writing across the curriculum. In 2004 I wrote an article that was published in Guideposts magazine. I am a graduate of the Institute of Children's Literature. In 2010 I attended Wildacres writing program in the Blue Ridge Mountains and I started my novel. I have taken three courses with the Great Smokies Writing program and I am a member of SCBWI. I love reading and writing. I also enjoy gardening, walking, puzzling, working crossword puzzles and cooking. I have four awesome grandsons and I spend a great deal of time with them.
I am in the scout uniform, my cousin Jane in the middle and my sister Ella on the end.
